Sally Frank, Founder of the Melrose Farmers’ Market, Passes Away At Age 88

market

If you’ve ever strolled through the Melrose Farmers’ Market, you have Sally Frank to thank.

I’m saddened to share that Sally passed away this week at the age of 88.

Thirty-one years ago, Sally decided she was tired of driving out of town for fresh produce. Her solution? Bring the farm to Melrose. The very first market had just five vendors tucked behind City Hall — small but mighty.

In 2005, the city honored her vision by officially renaming it the Sally Frank’s Farmers’ Market. True to Sally’s heart, she made sure the market was about more than just food. She arranged for surplus goods to go to those in need—a tradition that continues today through The Food Drive.

Thanks to Sally, the market has blossomed into a joyful tradition where neighbors connect, kids dance to live music, and dinner ingredients are handed to you by the people who grew them. It’s not just about shopping — it’s about community.

Thank you, Sally, for planting the seed that continues to grow year after year. Your legacy lives on in every basket of apples, every loaf of bread, and every smile exchanged at the market.
