New Department of Public Health Campus Named After Melrose Resident Dr. Alfred DeMaria, Jr.

It was an amazing ceremony with two senators and five public health commissioners in attendance to unveil the new name of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health campus in Jamaica Plain: “The Dr. Alfred DeMaria, Jr. Campus.”

A longtime Melrose resident, Dr. DeMaria has received one of the highest honors in Massachusetts public health. Over his distinguished career as Chief Infectious Disease Medical Officer, State Epidemiologist, and Assistant Commissioner, he led the Commonwealth through challenges from the HIV/AIDS epidemic to COVID-19, always championing health equity and science-based policy.

By naming the campus after him, we celebrate his enduring impact and preserve his memory for future generations. This stands as a lasting tribute to his vision, values, and service. His legacy will continue to inspire all who enter its doors.

Beyond policy, Dr. DeMaria has been a trusted expert, passionate educator, and mentor. At the Public Health Museum in Tewksbury, he has brought the history of public health to life—shaping exhibits, leading programs, and inspiring future professionals through youth programs and mentorship.

This renaming is a deeply fitting recognition of his lifetime of service. His legacy of leadership, education, and commitment to public health will live on through this campus—and through the many lives he continues to inspire.

Dr Al – Melrose is proud of you!
