The Student Respect Garden

Tucked away by the knoll, where the memorials stand, is something truly special — the Student Respect Garden. The plaque reads: “to forever establish the connection between the students of Melrose Public Schools and the veteran community. The circular shape represents unity and the cycle of learning from past stories and of experiences. The flowers present in the garden have symbolic meanings, including hope, peace, faith, wisdom, admiration, strength, honor, and respect.”

The Student Respect Garden is a thoughtful and layered tribute—blending symbolism, history, and growth all in one space. The way the plaque ties students to veterans, with the circle and the flowers representing shared values, makes it feel alive and ongoing, not just a static memorial.

I think this might be the most perfect memorial — living, growing, and carrying forward the lessons of the past while rooting them in the hands and hearts of the future.
