A Busy Saturday In Melrose Built Community Connections

Last Saturday saw the return, for the 8th year, of Porchfest, one of Melrose's favorite fall community events. On the same day, residents helped support sustainability with the semiannual Swap and a clean up day at Ell Pond. In all of these events, neighbors spent time with one another and strenghtened community connections.
Zero Waste Melrose sponsors a Swap event twice a year, where residents can drop off goods of all kinds, from clothing to electronics, and others can pick them up for free. The event is always popular. If you missed the swap, next Saturday, families looking for Halloween costumes can check out a costume-specific swap event on the First Baptist Church lawn.
Volunteers helped with clean up at Ell Pond, where periodic clean up days are required to keep invasive water chestnuts at bay. Volunteers also helped clear trash and downed trees.
Then Melrosians spent the afternoon enjoying Porchfest, where dozens of bands performed across the city. From singer-songwriters to rock bands to a pirate-themed performance troupe to a saxophone band, Melrose hosted a huge range of music, and Melrose residents came out to support their favorite musicians, enjoy the atmosphere, and spend time with their neighbors in a giant, citywide block party.
