Trinity Parish Corbel

I learned a new word today: CORBEL

A corbel is a structural or decorative bracket that projects from a wall to support weight—think beams, arches, or mantels. Traditionally carved from stone or timber, corbels are used for both structural support and as decorative elements.

This particular corbel in Trinity Parish’s sanctuary has a story worth telling.

It is a carved stone from St. Mary’s Abbey in Melrose, Scotland. It now rests beneath a truss on the south side of the church.

The Scottish Abbey dates back to the 1400s. In 1886, this remarkable piece was gifted to Trinity Parish by William L. Williams.

A small architectural detail, yes — but also a tangible link across centuries, continents, and communities. Proof that history often hides in plain sight, quietly holding things up.
