Melrose YMCA

66 years old, overweight, never been to a gym, what is a girl to do?
I meander by the YMCA on Main Street multiple times a week and notice lots of people coming and going and I wonder if it is time to bite the bullet and check it out.
Then I saw a notice for the “Live Strong” program – a 12-week class for cancer survivors and I realized this is an omen that it is time to join! This program is amazing, but I want to talk about the Y first.
The YMCA is a place for all ages, sizes, shapes, and abilities. Their equipment is varied and in excellent condition. The pool looks magnificent, and the locker rooms are being renovated. There are classes for all levels, or you can just use the equipment. The place is clean and comfortable. Staff are welcoming and helpful.
Now the “Live Strong” program – these sessions are run by Courtney and Jeff and a phenomenal group of mentors. The mentors are cancer survivors and have been through the program. They are cheerleaders, encouragers, and teachers. We spent the first week learning how to use the equipment correctly. We have been exposed to a variety of classes including nutrition, weightlifting, chair yoga, and Tai Chi.
The goal is to get stronger, and I have to say it works. I am amazed at the progression from week 1 to 7. Any time you feel like slacking these wonderful instructors and mentors gently push us to increase our workout. They do it with love and a sense of humor. Joining the YMCA has been life altering!
